How to save GIFs from Twitter (as real .gif files, not MP4)
Twitter GIFs are really silent MP4 videos. Why that is, how to download one as MP4 or as a true .gif, and which quality setting to choose.
You right-click a GIF on X, look for "Save image as", and it is not there. Or you download it with some tool and get an .mp4 file instead of a GIF. Both happen for the same reason: the GIFs on X are not GIFs. This guide explains what they really are and how to save them in the format you actually need.
Why Twitter GIFs are really MP4 videos
When someone posts a GIF, whether uploaded from their device or picked from X's GIF search, X converts it to a short, silent, looping MP4 video. It then plays that video with a "GIF" label on it.
X does this because the GIF format is ancient and inefficient:
- A GIF can use only 256 colours per frame, which is why photos and gradients look grainy or banded in GIF form.
- GIF compression is weak. The same animation is often several times larger as a .gif than as an MP4.
So the file X stores is an MP4. Any honest downloader will give you exactly that, unless it converts the video back into a GIF for you.

How to download a Twitter GIF in one click

Choosing a GIF quality level
- Small produces the lightest file, with a reduced size and frame rate. Colour banding is visible on gradients. Good for reaction GIFs in chats with file limits.
- Medium is the default and the right choice most of the time: noticeably sharper and smoother, with colours blended (dithered) to hide banding, at a reasonable size.
- Original keeps the full resolution of the source. It looks best and produces by far the largest file, and takes longer to convert.
Whatever the level, the colours are chosen once for the whole animation, so they do not flicker or crawl from frame to frame the way cheap converters often do.
Converting an MP4 to GIF yourself
Already have the MP4? The free tool FFmpeg converts it with good results. This command makes a 480-pixel-wide GIF at 15 frames per second, with a palette built for this specific clip:

smaller file. Online converters do the same job with less control, and you
have to upload the file to them.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my downloaded Twitter GIF have no sound?
GIFs have no audio track, on X or anywhere else. If a looping clip on X plays sound, it was posted as a video, not a GIF, and it downloads as a normal video.
Why is the .gif so much bigger than the MP4?
GIF stores every frame as a compressed image, with no clever compression between frames. A 2 MB MP4 can easily become a 10 MB GIF at full size. Use a smaller quality level if size matters.
Can I save images from X the same way?
