Two people download the same Twitter video and get two different files: one crisp, one a smeary 320-pixel mess. Neither did anything wrong; their tools simply picked different copies. X keeps several versions of every video, and understanding that is the whole secret to downloading in HD.

When a video is uploaded, X re-encodes it into a set of MP4 files at different resolutions and bitrates, plus a streaming playlist that its player uses. For a typical landscape video that set looks something like this:

The exact numbers vary with the video's shape and length, and the Full HD version only exists if the upload was 1080p to begin with. The important part is the spread: the best version can carry forty times as much data as the worst.
Why downloaded videos come out blurry
- The tool picked the wrong version. Some downloaders take the first file in X's list, or offer every version with unclear labels. The fix is to choose the highest resolution, or use a tool that does it for you.
- The upload was low quality. A video that was re-uploaded, screen-recorded or sent through a messaging app before it reached X is blurry at the source. No version of it is sharp.
- You judged it by the player. X's player adapts to your connection and may be showing a lower version than the best one stored. The file you download can be sharper than what you watched.
- It was compressed after downloading. Sending the file through WhatsApp, Messenger or similar apps shrinks it again.
How to always get the highest-quality version

What about 4K, or MP3?
4K: X plays videos at up to 1080p. Tools that promise "4K Twitter downloads" either rename a 1080p file or upscale it, which makes the file bigger without adding detail.
MP3: X has no audio-only version of a video. To keep just the sound, download the MP4 and extract the audio, for example with FFmpeg:

This copies the original AAC audio track without re-encoding. Use
-c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 audio.mp3 in place of
-c:a copy audio.m4a if you specifically need MP3.
