How to download Twitter videos without an X account
You can still save videos from X while signed out. What works without logging in, what X keeps behind its sign-in wall, and how to download either way.
You do not need an X account to save most videos from X. In 2023, X briefly hid nearly everything from visitors who were not signed in, and a lot of advice written then still says an account is required. Today, public posts opened from a link are visible again, and so are their videos. Here is what works while signed out and what does not.
What X shows to signed-out visitors
When you open x.com without an account, X serves a lighter version of its site. It is built differently from the one signed-in users get, but the media in it is the same.
| Content | Signed out |
|---|---|
| A public post opened from a link | Visible, with its video, GIF or photos |
| A public profile and its posts | Generally visible |
| Home timeline, search, notifications | Require an account |
| Posts from protected accounts | Hidden |
| Media marked as sensitive or age-restricted | Often hidden behind a sign-in prompt |
The rule of thumb: if the video plays in your browser while you are signed out, you can download it without an account.
Downloading on a computer without signing in
Twitter Video Downloader works on the signed-out version of x.com too. The download icon appears in the row of buttons under each post, on photos, videos and animated GIFs, including media inside quoted posts.
- Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open the post's link in Chrome. No need to sign in.
- Click the download icon under the post. The video is saved in the highest-quality version X offers, the same file a signed-in user gets.
Signed-out downloads are made without your browser's cookies, so nothing ties them to any X account, even one you use in another window. If a download needs an account, the button says so instead of failing silently.
Download websites and yt-dlp
Download websites never use your account in the first place: you paste a link, and the site fetches the post as a visitor. That means they work without an account, and also that they cannot reach anything a signed-out visitor cannot see. The steps are in our overview of download methods.
yt-dlp also downloads public posts without any login. For posts that need one,
it can use the cookies of a browser where you are signed in, with
--cookies-from-browser.
The limits of signed-out downloading
- Lower request limits. X allows signed-out visitors fewer requests than accounts. Downloading many posts in a row can trigger "too many requests" sooner. Waiting a few minutes resets it.
- Sensitive media. If a post is marked sensitive, X may only show it to signed-in users who have allowed sensitive content in their settings.
- Protected accounts. Their posts are visible only to approved followers. No tool can download them without that approval, and none should.
Using a private or Incognito window
A private window is an easy way to see exactly what X shows to visitors. Note
that Chrome extensions are disabled in Incognito by default: to use one there,
open chrome://extensions, click Details on the
extension and switch on Allow in Incognito.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an X account to download a video from a link someone sent me?
Not if the post is public. Open the link, check that the video plays, and download it with any of the methods above.
Why does X ask me to sign in when I open some posts?
The post is from a protected account, has been marked as sensitive, or X is limiting signed-out traffic at that moment. Try again later, or sign in.
Is the quality lower without an account?
No. X serves the same set of MP4 versions either way. See how X video quality works to make sure you save the best one.
